Coordination for Prisoner ’s child and family work

In Finland there are estimated to be approximately 8 000 – 10 000 children, with one parent or both parents in prison. Their suffering can be reduced. The parenthood of prisoners can be supported. Prisoner ’s child and family activities responds for this need.

Krits has developed the family work with prisoners and their families since 2005 in two projects. During the spring 2011 this function got a permanent status and is funded by Slot Machine Association (RAY).

Objectives and tasks

  • To clear up the profile and the importance of released prisoner’s family work as a part of the public and third sector activity (NGO).
  • To raise up the status of families and relatives.
  • To organize the training for child and family work in co-operation with the public and the third sector actors.
  • To co-ordinate and develop Prisoner’s child and family network co-operation.
  • To collate the child and family work methods and knowledge.
  • To create new forms for child and family work.
  • To maintain and increase the peer activities, to pilot a model for open peer support group for children. To support the peer actors including the relatives of prisoners in their association (VAO).
  • To develop new web-based support activities.
  • To implement service and counselling activities for prisoner’s families and relatives.
